SPRIND and NADI Launch €40 Million Challenge for European AI Chip Design

According to EU-Startups, the challenge will run over 20 months across two stages. Stage 1, scheduled from November through July 2027, will select seven teams, each receiving €2.6 million. Stage 2 will run for a further year and shortlist three teams, each of which will receive €7 million. Participating teams will also receive technical and commercial coaching to help bring their designs to market. EU-Startups reported that further financing details and dates for Stage 1 are still to be confirmed.

NADI, announced earlier this year, is still in the process of formal establishment in the Netherlands. Tech.eu reported that it is a major initiative of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, modelled after SPRIND, the ARPA agencies, and ARIA. The Wennink Report, led by former ASML CEO Peter Wennink, recommended a minimum government commitment of €1.5-2 billion for NADI's deployment budget. SPRIND has been closely involved in NADI's formation.

According to Tech.eu, the 2024 Draghi Report identified SPRIND as the optimal model for public innovation funding in Europe.
