A London-based artificial intelligence company co-founded by former Google DeepMind research lead Thore Graepel is launching, according to reporting from Sifted and Tech.eu.
Graepel, a co-creator of AlphaGo, the Google DeepMind programme that defeated human players at the board game Go, left Google DeepMind this summer. His new venture, Metis Reasoning, is named after the Greek goddess of wisdom and is understood to be initially raising tens of millions of dollars, Tech.eu reported.
The company is pursuing what it describes as a compute-efficient route to advancing AI, positioning itself as an alternative to the frontier model approach taken by OpenAI and Anthropic. Its focus is on AI reasoning, the process by which a system works through a problem and connects information rather than generating an answer by matching learned patterns. According to Tech.eu, Metis believes this approach is well suited to sectors such as robotics and engineering.
