A person who ran an online scam ended up losing close to $5 million in bitcoin after storing the proceeds on tampered Ledger hardware wallets, according to blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis.
As reported by Decrypt and CoinDesk, Chainalysis traced the funds to a task scam. In that scheme, people were paid to fabricate product sales and reviews, then were asked to make deposits before they could collect their earnings.
The bitcoin was later drained through compromised wallet devices. CoinDesk described the incident as one involving a Ledger spy-chip exploit, and said the fraudster became one of the largest victims of the affected hardware wallets. The loss was placed at roughly $4.8 million by Decrypt and at almost $5 million by CoinDesk.
