A developer known as Sword has added physical disc support to PS5SX2, a native port of the PCSX2 PlayStation 2 emulator built for jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles. According to TechPowerUp, the feature appeared as a beta in version 2.01 on October 10, a day after Sword demonstrated it on X with a clip showing a PS2 disc being inserted into a PS5.
Rather than running directly off the disc, PS5SX2 copies the disc to storage the first time it is inserted and then launches the game from that copy, per the release notes. Sword noted the feature had only been tested on one original PS5. TechPowerUp reported that the console's optical drive apparently cannot read CDs, meaning PS2 titles shipped on CD cannot be used through the internal drive.
Version 2.02, released later the same day, introduced an experimental option, disabled by default, that builds on a community contribution allowing PS2 discs to be read from a USB DVD or Blu-ray drive, which could benefit Digital Edition owners. The emulator can render at up to 6 times the PS2's native resolution, though the README cautions that some games are too demanding to run at 6x on a standard PS5.
