Perplexity Brings Its Local AI Agent to Windows PCs With RTX GPUs

Perplexity has extended its Portable Computer agent to Windows, working with Nvidia to bring the local-first tool to compatible PCs. According to Tom's Hardware, the release arrived on September 14 through the existing Perplexity app for Windows, after the functionality had previously been limited to Linux-based systems.

Running the agent requires specific hardware: a GeForce RTX or RTX PRO GPU with 24GB or more of VRAM. A Pro or Max Perplexity subscription is also needed. As Android Authority noted, the move means users no longer need an Nvidia DGX Spark setup, which Perplexity's earlier version targeted, to run the tool.

Portable Computer is a local version of Perplexity Computer, the company's agent for handling multistep tasks. Perplexity Computer can plan work, run subtasks through connectors and tools, and produce results beyond a simple chat reply, but it runs in the company's cloud and uses Computer credits. The Portable version runs those features on the user's own PC and does not consume credits, though the company said the agent can send tasks to cloud models when the user gives explicit permission.
