The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a mobile application that lets authorised industry participants scan the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of phones and submit device details to its verification platform, according to TechCabal.
The regulator announced the tool at a media briefing on Thursday, saying it is meant to make compliance easier for manufacturers, importers, distributors and phone dealers as the commission increases enforcement of equipment approval rules.
The app is part of the NCC's Device Checker initiative, which enables consumers to confirm whether a device has secured regulatory approval before buying it. The commission says the broader platform aims to reduce the circulation of counterfeit, cloned, unauthorised and otherwise non-compliant devices in Nigeria.
