Microsoft has introduced a rebuilt version of Windows 11 Search at its Windows and Surface event, according to TechPowerUp. The company says the search box can now adjust system settings directly from the taskbar, handling thousands of quick actions entered as plain commands.
Windows chief Pavan Davuluri demonstrated the feature on stage. Examples cited include commands to switch to dark mode, turn on Bluetooth, dim the screen, mute audio, and minimize all open windows. Microsoft describes these as an initial set, with additional capabilities planned, including Phone Link actions such as sending a text from a connected phone.
The redesigned Search is built on WinUI 3, which Microsoft says makes it faster and less demanding on system resources. The company reported notable improvements in speed and memory use during early testing. The interface moves to a single list of results, replacing the earlier design that featured a large preview pane. Microsoft says Search should also handle typos and synonyms more effectively, with richer file details and web previews due later this year.
