Samsung and SK Hynix are moving to upgrade their NAND flash memory factories in China, according to reporting from GSMArena, as Chinese rival YMTC claimed the position of China's largest NAND producer.
GSMArena reported that YMTC reached a 38.5% market share this year, up from 28% a year earlier. That gain pushed it past Samsung, which now holds the second position with 33.5% (down from 36%), and SK Hynix, which sits third at 17% (down from 20%). In response, the two Korean companies are reportedly working to expand their production capacity in China.
Samsung's plant in Xian, China accounts for roughly 40% of its global NAND production capacity, according to GSMArena, though it produces relatively older chips of around 200 layers. A higher layer count generally allows more storage per chip.
