Ford is preparing to offer home backup power at a lower cost through its upcoming Fathom electric truck, according to reporting from Electrek and InsideEVs.
The Fathom, which Ford is positioning at a price below $30,000, is set to include a bidirectional charging system. Electrek reported that the system does away with the need for an expensive external inverter, a component typically required to route power from a vehicle into a home.
InsideEVs reported that the truck will use an onboard DC-to-AC inverter, meaning owners would not need to buy separate, costly hardware to use the vehicle as a home backup power source. Both outlets framed the approach as a less expensive alternative to the home backup setup associated with Ford's F-150 Lightning.
