OpenAI has introduced an initiative called the Grid Protectors Program, which aims to lower the electricity consumption of its data centers when local demand on the power grid rises. The company behind ChatGPT says the approach could help prevent grids from being overwhelmed during peak hours, according to reporting from Tom's Hardware and Decrypt.
The program relies on load shedding, a method that Tom's Hardware notes has been used since the 1970s. By reducing power draw when communities need electricity most, OpenAI says its facilities could support the grid during emergencies such as cold snaps or heat waves. Decrypt reported that the company frames future facilities as capable of easing pressure on power grids by cutting demand during such events.
